Types of Accommodations
Individuals with diagnosed disabilities may request an accommodation from TCOLE to extend their testing time by thirty minutes. These requests must be submitted directly to TCOLE by the academy’s training coordinator.
Additional accommodations, such as adjusting monitor or browser settings for color contrast, zoom level, or providing colored overlays may be offered by the exam site, but are not provided by TCOLE.
Procedures for Requesting an Accommodation
When:
An accommodation request should be submitted no less than 90 days before the testing date. Accommodations must be requested prior to the first exam attempt and will not be granted after the third failed attempt.
What:
Accommodation requests should include:
- The student's name and PID.
- Documentation of the reason for accommodation on a doctor's letterhead. (NOTE: Medical records are NOT necessary)
- A letter from the Academy Coordinator documenting accommodations made during the basic licensing course.
- A diagnosis of the learning disability that includes prescribed accommodation parameters.
- The diagnosis must be conducted by a certified specialist or documented health professional/educational specialist trained in the disability (e.g., Dyslexia Testing Specialist or health professional/educational specialist trained in dyslexic training and assessment).
How:
Testing accommodations are not applied automatically, even after an approval letter has been issued. The accommodation must be manually applied to the examinee's TCOLE record through a specific notification process.
- The examinee must first complete and have their basic licensing course reported to TCOLE.
- The training coordinator is responsible for notifying the proctor email that the examinee is ready to test with accommodations.
- Once reviewed, the training coordinator will receive a formal notification approving or denying the request.
- TCOLE staff will then apply the accommodation manually in TCLEDD's.
- Only after this manual application can the examinee schedule and take their examination with the approved accommodation.
Important: Training coordinators should not assume the accommodation is active simply because the examinee received an approval letter. The notification email is a required step to ensure the accommodation is properly applied before the exam is scheduled.
Where:
Accommodation requests should be submitted to proctor@tcole.texas.gov.
